Our (teeny) Budget Bathroom Makeover, Part 3

With any project, especially of the DIY kind, come great opportunities for learning. Learning through failure, that is. (You like where this is going already, don’t you?) DIY-ing on a budget, for instance an extremely tight budget -like ours, presents it’s own set of difficulties. You’ve heard the expression, “you get what you pay for”, right? Well, what if you can’t pay for hardly anything?  What happens when you can’t afford to be very choosy?

Our (teeny) Budget Bathroom Makeover, Part 2

Hey there! Were you in suspense after reading Tuesday’s post? You lost sleep, didn’t you? Yeah… sorry ’bout that. I fully intended to post Part 2 yesterday. However, I ran into some tech issues and spent the day learning that I don’t know squat. But never fear! We are back with part 2 of Our (teeny) Budget Bathroom Makeover.

Our Budget Bathroom Makeover, part 1

When I moved into my husband’s home almost 7 years ago, it was a total bachelor pad. He used the home as a place to eat and sleep, and the rest of his time was spent out in the barn, or working 60+ hours a week. The weeks leading up to our wedding involved a major plumbing overhaul (thanks Dad!), and some pretty intense cleaning (thanks Mom!). The place was quite neglected long before Prince Charming took ownership. As such, I’ve run into my share of mouse spines and old termite damage in my efforts to give it some love.

How To Naturally Get Rid of Fungus Gnats

Houseplants are not a new topic around here. My love for them began long, long ago, in the everything-green pacific northwest. But it wasn’t until my twenties when I really appreciated the life they could bring into a space. I had my second apartment- a much less scarier place than the first. No longer was the Charles Manson wanna-be living down two doors down; and gone were the days of the old guy dressed as Spider Man who peered at me through the gap of his barely opened door. I was moving up in the world, folks.

Home is where…

“So”, he said. “You miss Arizona yet?”

The question was obviously meant for me. But at the same time I answered “Nope”, he chimed in with “Yes!” We were hanging out with his parents, sitting at the kitchen table and talking about the weather. It’s been an awfully cold winter. Bitter cold. Local readers of the Farmers Almanac all warned us it would be.

My father-in-law wanted to know if I’d had enough of the cold weather that hammers these northern midwest states. I’d spent most of my life living “out west”, as they say here. Southern Arizona had been my home for a long, long time. Leaving the dangers of sunstroke & dehydration for frostbite has certainly been an experience. But I didn’t miss the desert. My husband, who’s lived here his whole life, would move there in a heartbeat if he could. Read more…

Conquering The Laundry Room

Ugh. Why is it so hard to finish just one room? I know, I know… money & time. I don’t know about you, but currently we have neither.

It’s tempting to throw in the towel and pout. Some days, that’s all the maturity I can muster. Maybe you’re on the same road we are- where your home, your sanctuary, is anything but a place of peace. Sure, most places you look around here are ugly or unfinished. But then there are those major repairs that are super urgent and extreeeemely expensive. We feel like we’re trying to extinguish blazing infernos with squirt guns. Read more…

Light’s Out – My (funny) Electrical Lesson

I’ve often said I’m not the brightest bulb in the box. I have good intentions, though. (I do hope that counts for something.)

So, I’m working on various and sundry home projects. Among them is our laundry room remodel. It’s been a family affair, really. Extended family. Thanks to them, the hardest work is done. And now, I’m chipping away at what remains.
